Critical Support Data for Triton Atmosphere Study
Abstract
We request time on Keck with NIRC2 to obtain high-resolution, AO-assisted images of a star to be occulted by Triton in October 2017 to determine if the star is single or a close double. We have been awarded time on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) to observe this Triton occultation. The observations proposed here for Keck will support these SOFIA observations; by determining whether the star is double, we will be able to predict where Triton's shadow will fall on the Earth and therefore maneuver SOFIA into its shadow successfully.
