Resolving the Double FU Orionis System RNO 1B/1C With Chandra
Abstract
The close pair of reddened young stars known as RNO 1B/1C in the Lynds 1287 (L1287) dark cloud provides a rare example of a binary whose components are both FU Orionis-type stars (FUors). Classical FUors such as RNO 1B have undergone large optical outbursts spanning decades that are attributed to a dramatic increase in the accretion rate onto the star. A large fraction of the mass in the surrounding disk can accrete onto the star during such events. We propose to obtain the first pointed X-ray observation of the L1287 cloud with RNO 1B/1C at the ACIS aimpoint. Chandra will resolve the pair and provide a direct comparison of the X-ray properties of two nearly-identical FUors which formed together from the same natal material and are coeval and equidistant.
