Possibility of Parameters Assessment of the Low-Frequency Gradient-Vorticity Oceanic Waves Based on Satellite Altimetry Data
Abstract
The analysis of satellite altimetry sea level anomalies(1992-2012) has revealed the wavelike propagation in the Japan/East Sea. The phase speed of the waves ranges from about 0.004 km/day and their wavelength is approximately 1.5 km. We assessed the degree of stationarity and proposed the phenomenological model of the standing-progressive planetary waves, to explain such oceanographic fields' spatiotemporal variability in closed seas as areas with abrupt phase shifts to the opposite values that coincide with the areas of minimal amplitude, along with the areas with smooth phase variation.
