MJO signal over islands: insights from idealized cloud-resolving simulations of the response of the atmosphere around an island to changes in large-scale circulation
Abstract
Cloud-resolving simulations of the diurnal cycle over an idealized, flat and circular island show that the diurnal cycle of precipitation is sensitive to the large-scale vertical circulation, nad influences daily averages of precipitation over the island and surrounding ocean. This sensitivity might help explain why the observed intraseasonal variability of deep convection is generally weaker over islands and coastal regions compared to its intraseasonal variability over surrounding oceans.
