Magnetic drift version of Dst effect
Abstract
On a classical Dst effect energetic radiation belt electrons decrease their energy during magnetic storm main phase and adiabatically recover during the recovery phase. Similar cooling and recovery may took place during one magnetic drift particle orbit. Low-altitude satellites registered Earthward shift of the evening side of electron radiation belt during magnetic storm main phases. If one explain evening decreases by the particle losses it is necessary to suppose that every time when satellite pass through the morning side it registered new acceleration of the energetic electrons. But cases of the fast accelerations of 1.7 MeV electrons are not so frequent. It is reasonable to suppose that because of the magnetic field decrease at the evening side caused by partial ring current, particle mirror points here became shifted to lower latitudes and adiabatic cooling took place as well. Then during the magnetic drift of the electrons to the morning side particles recovers their position and energy.
