Assimilation of Real Time Data into Local Ionospheric Prediction and Forecasting Mediterranean Model
Abstract
This paper will present the basic approach on assimilation of real time data into local ionospheric prediction and forecasting Mediterranean model. This approach was used in two projects: GIFINT (Geomagnetic Indices Forecasting and Ionospheric Nowcasting Tools) and CIFS (Cyprus Ionospheric Forecasting Service). Successful modeling has the Simplified Ionospheric Regional Model (SIRM) as a background to assimilate in real time the critical frequency of the F2 layer (foF2) and the propagation factor (M(3000)F2) values coming from the following ionospheric stations: Rome and Gibilmanna (Italy) for GIFINT, Nicosia (Cyprus) for CIFS. Some examples of generated maps for foF2 and M(3000)F2 will be shown. The importance of the role of real time assimilation of vertical sounding characteristics will be considered.
