Overview of the research underpinning climate services provision at AEMET
Abstract
The establishment of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) adopted by the Third World Climate Conference in 2009 has originated new fields of activity in National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) and other mandated institutions. AEMET -as many other meteorological institutions- has re-oriented its activities to meet demands of a wide variety of sectors sensitive to climate conditions. This communication will present an overview of the main research lines behind the current provision of climate services. AEMET is very much aware of the potential opportunities arising from a better knowledge of climate system and mainly from the application and implementation of this knowledge to advance in the long way towards climate resilient societies. The presentation will present the historical evolution of research underpinning services from the AEMET perspective, the current situation and the foreseeable trend at the light of steps given by WMO to globally implement the GFCS. Special focus will be placed on climate services related with climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting and climate change projections.
