IRIS observations of spicules
Abstract
Spicules are jet-like features that have a chromospheric origin but are also visible in transition region lines and have been suggested to have coronal counterparts as well. While their formation is still unclear, it has been suggested that they may play an important part in the transfer of energy and mass to the outer atmosphere. Multi-wavelength observations of spicules are invaluable to trace their formation and histories. In this work we show some first observations of spicules as seen by the IRIS observatory. Taking advantage of its fast cadence and unique filtergrams, we analyze several time series and characterize the spicule properties as seen by IRIS.
