Cascade during YOTC: Simulating organized tropical convection using a cloud-system-resolving model over large domains (Invited)
Abstract
Limited-area versions of the UK Met Office Unified Model that explicitly simulate deep convective motions over large domains are presented as tools to study phenomena such as the MJO, the diurnal cycle of convection, and convective aggregation. These simulations, undertaken as part of the UK Cascade project, are compared to GCMs and observations in an effort to better understand scale interactions and improve global model representation of convective processes. YOTC cases, which leverage increased availability of operational analyses and attention from the scientific community, are highlighted. OLR from (upper) narrow-band IR satellite observations, (middle) 4 km explicit convection simulation, and (lower) 12 km parameterized convection simulation, about 2 days into a 10-day case study of an MJO event starting 6 April 2009.
