Surveying Open Clusters for Emission Line Objects: A Progress Report
Abstract
This is a progress report on the third year of observing open clusters with the University of Washington's 0.75-m telescope at Manastash Ridge Observatory to search for planetary nebulae. The goal of the survey has been to find planetary nebulae in association with open clusters that can be used as a catalyst in determining accurate distances to the nebulae. During summer 2012 twelve open clusters were observed with Sloan g' and narrow-band [OIII] filters. An interesting feature was found in the old open cluster Ruprecht 147. A spectrum obtained with the 3.5-m telescope at Apache Point Observatory showed that the object is not likely a planetary nebula as no emission lines were observed.
