Morphology of G-condition occurrence over Irkutsk
Abstract
G condition specifies that the peak electron density of the F2 layer (NmF2) is lower than the peak electron density of the F1 layer (NmF1). The hand-scaled ionogram data recorded by DPS-4 Digisondes at Irkutsk (52N, 104E) for 2003-2010 period were used for statistical analysis of G-condition. The local time, seasonal and solar/geomagnetic activity dependencies of G-condition occurrence and duration have been studied. We analyze and discuss factors influencing G-condition occurrence, among which are (1) geomagnetic activity; (2) regular diurnal, seasonal and solar activity variations of NmF2 and NmF1; (3) solar activity dependence of NmF2 disturbances; and (4) role of traveling ionospheric disturbances in formation of G condition.
