A Study of Thread Load Distribution Using Optical Deformation Analysis
Abstract
It is important to measure the load distribution on bolt threads in a way which represents in-service conditions. Previous methods to experimentally find thread loads have had limitations since polymer replicas have been used, and the joint is dead weight tested. In this investigation an aluminium nut is torqued on a stainless steel bolt. By applying optical deformation analysis, using a GOM ARAMIS stereo camera system, this investigation finds the nut load distribution. The method used is a novel method for measuring load and allows for a more representative experimental setup. Results show that the first thread carries almost twice the average load of the consecutive pitches.
