Enhanced Scientific Search and Retrieval from Citizen Science Tagged Data
Abstract
The annotations and tags gathered on large datasets through Citizen Science tasks become an enhanced set of metadata terms for search and retrieval by the research community. The goals of Citizen Science projects should include acquisition of well designed metadata tags that are derived from a science-driven data model, consistent with the search requirements of the scientists who will use the data products for scientific discovery. We will describe a prototype of a Citizen Science framework, consisting of multiple tasks, aimed at generating rich annotations, both predefined and ad hoc. Specifically, the Zooniverse framework project will be presented in relation to the planned petascale LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) big data astronomy project.
