R & D at the Underground Research Laboratory, HADES, Belgium and the State of the Art on THMC behaviour of Boom clay
Abstract
The HADES URL is the main research facility in Belgium for R&D on the geological disposal of radioactive waste. The paper starts with an overview of the main objectives of research performed in the HADES URL and the organizational structure of the Economic Interest Grouping EURIDICE, which is the association in charge of the management of the HADES facility. The paper gives a chronological outline of various phases in the development of the HADES URL as well as of the main experiments that have been performed in the Underground Research Facility. A general view on the THMC behaviour of the Belgian potential radwaste repository host formation Boom Clay is then outlined at the end of this paper (The state-of-the-art report on THMC). Finally, a summary overview is given of the PRACLAY experiment, which is a large scale in situ demonstration experiment investigating the combined effects of excavation and thermal load including impact on the barrier performance of engineered barriers and the Boom Clay.
