Experimental Studies At Duplicated Flight Conditions To Examine The Aerothermal Characteristics Of The HIFIRE-1 And HIFIRE-5 Flight Test Configurations
Abstract
Experimental studies have been conducted in the LENSI hypervelocity tunnel to examine the aero- thermal characteristics of full-scale replicas of the HIFiRE-1 and HIFiRE-5 at duplicated flight conditions to support the selection of the geometric characteristics and flight trajectory of these vehicles. The main objective of these studies was to provide measurements with which to select the nosetip bluntness, trip and flare geometry so that measurements could be obtained in laminar, transitional and fully turbulent flows and to obtain direct comparisons with flight measurements and detailed computations. From these experimental studies and numerical computations, modifications were suggested to the initial flight geometries and trajectories to provide well-defined regions of boundary layer transition and separated flows.
