Viscoelastic Instabilities in the FENE Dumbbell Model
Abstract
The FENE dumbbell model for viscoelastic fluid flow is a simple model for enforcing the finite extensibility of polymers. Various closure approximations to FENE give rise to more computationally tractable models, but whose behavior can be qualitatively different than the full FENE model. Recent observations from these similar models has shown that instabilities can arise for sufficiently large Weissenberg number. We develop a method to solve the full FENE model numerically, and investigate the behavior of FENE fluids compared to the linear Oldroyd-B dumbbell model and the FENE-P approximation to FENE in the context of such instabilities.
