The EUV Spectrum of an Active Region from SDO-EVE Measurements During a Lunar Transit
Abstract
The Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Variability Experiment (EVE) on the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) measures the spectral irradiance of the Sun in the EUV wavelength range. As an irradiance instrument, EVE normally does not produce spectra with any spatial information; however, during a lunar transit on November 6, 2010, the moon occluded a single active region on the Sun. This fortuitous event allows for the determination of the spectrum of that active region from 6.5 to 65 nm (0.1 nm resolution), a wavelength range containing many coronal and transition region emission lines. The EVE spectrum from the active region and a DEM derived from it is compared to other active region and quiet Sun spectra and DEMs.
