Using Global Heliospheric Reconstructions to Separate Multiple CME and CIR Flows
Abstract
The heliospheric propagation of density structures has been observed and measured by the heliospheric imagers (HIs) of the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) in Earth orbit since early 2003 and on the twin Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft in ~1 AU solar orbits since early 2007. We discuss several three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction techniques being used with these HI data sets and their capabilities for distinguishing and tracking separate CME/ICME flows in the inner heliosphere during very active periods, and/or separating CME/ICME and CIR flows. We include heliospheric modeling techniques based on kinematical solar wind models, MHD models, and the empirical Tappin-Howard (T-H) model. We focus on two periods of high activity: January 2010 and July-August 2010. We will also look at events during the Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI) Campaign in March-April 2008.
