Interannual variability of the Himalayan snow coverage and its relatinship with glaciers mass balance since 1998
Abstract
On the basis of a 12 year time series of snow indices derived from SPOT/VEGETATION radiances, we present an analysis of the interannual variability of mountains snow coverage in the Himalayan mountains. This analysis is principally performed with regard to the interannual meteorological fluctuations like the South Asian Monsoon and the mid latitude westerlies which can be considered as the prime drivers of precipitation in this region. As additional indicators, in situ observations of some glaciers mass balance are also compared to our results and the relationship between the snow seasonality and this mass balance is considered.
