Prototype Development of the GMT Fast Steering Mirror
Abstract
Fast Steering Mirror (FSM) is one of the secondary mirror systems of Giant Magellan Telescope, enabling tip-tilt compensation of image degradations caused by wind and structure jitter. FSM consists of seven segments, and each segment contains a lightweight mirror, mirror cell with supports, and vacuum sub-system. Tip-tilt mechanism is implemented in the axial supports of each segment.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute is developing a prototype of the FSM together with collaborators in Korea and USA. The prototype is a full-size FSM segment, which is divided into two parts; an off-axis mirror and a test-bed for tip-tilt actuation. The off-axis mirror with diameter of 1.06m will be fabricated by light-weighting, polishing, figuring, and testing. The tip-tilt test-bed is assembled by a dummy mirror, three axial supports, a lateral support, and a test-bed frame. The test-bed will be used for verifying the tip-tilt parameters and checking reaction forces. The prototype is expected to be completed by early 2012. In this paper, we present the plan and current status of the prototype development, and discuss future works.- Publication:
