Thermodynamics of Wigner crystallization
Abstract
The thermodynamics of Wigner crystallization is considered. The melting curve in the classical regime is p = AT4. In the T = 0 limit, the change in potential energy is related to the volume change. A dimensional argument is given to show that in four dimensions, the melting curve in the ρ-T plane is given by T = Kρ1/2, a fully quantal result. Finally, a schematic plot of critical density versus dimensionality is achieved.
