Spectral studies of time series of aa index and Antarctic Ozone
Abstract
The periodicity in geomagnetic activity using monthly aa-index from 1868 up to 2008 are analyzed. Discrete Fourier Transforms are used. Solar activity and geomagnetic indexes have some cyclic variations that are verified. Time series analysis used to investigate the stratospheric ozone formation and decomposition processes are studied. Different time series methods are applied to detect the reason for extreme high ozone concentrations. Antartic ozone data were measured from 1995 up to 2008 are studied. The total ozone density periodicities are determined by using ozone data from General Belgrano Station. The observed annual and semi-annual periodicities are related to the zonal stratospheric wind oscillations of 26-30 months (Reed et al., 1961). We confirm that they are related to the 6-months and 1-year periodicities of the sunspot and aa-geomagnetic activity.
