Ab Initio Simulations of Water Ice at Megabar Pressures
Abstract
Water ice at pressures between 10 and 40 Mbar is one of the primary components of the cores of gas giants. We present results exploring the behavior of ice under these conditions, including the prediction of a new zero-temperature ice phase at megabar pressures. We analyze the stability of this phase, describe its structural and electronic properties, and compare with other known phases of ice. We discuss how this phase can be detected with high-pressure experiments.
