Ongoing lateral growth of the southern central Andes in Argentina
Abstract
The factors controlling the width and the evolution of the Andes are still being debated. Geomorphological evidence is presented of Plio-Pleistocene folding along a 150x300-km N-S block located in the southern prolongation of the Sierras Pampeanas in Argentina. The folding is located outside the zone of influence of the central Chile horizontal subduction. It is suggested that this block contributes to the lateral growth of the Andes at these latitudes, and is consistent with the general trend of the Andes widening since the Miocene.
