Symbiotic Stars and Planetary Nebula Central Stars in the MACHO Galactic Bulge Database
Abstract
We examined the MACHO Galactic Bulge Database to find known symbiotic stars and central stars of planetary nebulae that showed variability. We used both the MACHO Variable Star Catalog and the full database of detected MACHO sources to identify and analyze objects. The CLEANest algorithm developed by Foster was used to determine the frequency characteristics of the objects in our sample. We found nine variable symbiotic stars out of fourteen candidates examined. Most of these showed long-term (hundreds of days) variability. A total of 74 planetary nebula central stars were found in the MACHO Galactic Bulge database. Only one of these showed clearly periodic variability (0.4 days) and four others exhibited irregular variability.
