CARMA Observations of the Mysterious Galactic Transient V838 Monocerotis
Abstract
The galactic source V838 Monocerotis is one of the most enigmatic transients known and continues to puzzle astronomers since its spectacular outburst in 2002. The unusual properties at nearly all wavelengths gave rise to a plethora of theoretical models, ranging from stellar mergers to extremes in the classical nova phase space.
Here we discuss the results of our program to use the C, D, and E array configurations to map the radial velocity distribution of CO (j=1-0) gas and dust in the vicinity of this source. In particular we will be discussing the implications of a possible continuum detection of dust with the E array at or near the region of the progenitor and whether or not it is evidence of eruptions prior to the 2002 event or associated with the event itself.- Publication:
