Gas Properties in the Vicinity of Isolated HII Regions
Abstract
HII regions found well beyond the main optical component of galaxies trace the formation of massive stars in the extreme gaseous outskirts of galaxies. These isolated HII regions present the opportunity to study the star formation process in environments that differ from the typical environment in a galaxy disk. We present HI data of a number of galaxies with isolated HII regions and examine their gas properties to determine if the densities and/or kinematics of the gas reveal information on the trigger of star formation. These HII regions trace new stars forming without the influence of significant stellar feedback and are an important test of gas density thresholds for star formation.
