Continued Monitoring of NGC 4051 and MCG-6-30-15
Abstract
We request continued monitoring of NGC4051 and MCG-6-30-15 which began in 1996, making the longest, and best sampled, continuous AGN X-ray lightcurves. Given good overlap with MAXI, and future observatories, these superb, legacy quality, lightcurves will allow study of AGN variability in the detail presently only available for binary sources. One particular aim is to determine whether these 2 AGN are analogues of `very high state' binary sources, as yet only found in one AGN. For MCG-6-30-15 we also wish to continue X-ray/optical monitoring to confirm that it shows a weak short-timescale correlation, like NGC4051, and hence test our theory that the correlation is weakest in AGN with hot discs (high accretion rate, small BH mass) where intrinsic disc variations dominate the optical.
