Educating the Community - reaching the real “end” in end-to-end tsunami preparedness (Invited)
Abstract
There is much talk about “end-to-end” systems in preparing communities for the tsunami hazard, yet few communities are truly prepared in the sense that most individual citizens know what to do in the event of a tsunami, especially a locally-generated event. Innovative mitigation measures used in communities in Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, as well as those in Alaska and Hawaii, will be presented. Education techniques tested in various tsunami-prone U.S., Pacific and Indian Ocean communities will be discussed. Examples of success stories and unmet challenges will be given.
