Combining atmospheric and ecosystem observations to monitor greenhouse gas budgets in Europe (Invited)
Abstract
The European continent enjoys dense networks of atmospheric concentration and ecosystem flux observation sites. But intensive management of ecosystems, spatial heterogeneities, complex terrain and ubiquitous anthropogenic emissions make the task of quantifying greenhouse gas budgets particularly challenging. Using data from the CARBOEUROPE research project, we will illustrate how errors can be reduced on the european greenhouse gas balance at various scales, and identify what are the remaining bottlenecks. Implications for the future Integrated Carbon Observing System (ICOS) of Europe will be discussed.
