Lognormality of the FUV Continuum Background
Abstract
We present an analysis of the far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1370-1720A) continuum background using the data obtained with the SPEAR/FIMS instrument. The FUV intensity distribution was found to be lognormal, and its angular power spectrum is a scale-free power-law. These characteristics can be attributable to the turbulent motion of the interstellar medium. The intensity distribution of FUV sin |b| is well characterized by a lognormal distribution with <log I> 2.71 and a standard deviation sigma 0.29. The lognormal distribution is the likely origin of large fluctuations noted, but largely ignored, in previous observations of the FUV continuum background. A least-square fit to the angular power spectrum for b > 10 deg with a power law of gamma -2.4 over the range 5 < l < 200.
