The Demographics of the National Astronomy REU Student Applicants
Abstract
Student applicant data from 19 national astronomy REU sites have been analyzed. The demographic data are typical of the student application pool for the past 10 years. Of the 631 student applicants 57% are male, 43% female, and 15% are underrepresented minorities; twenty-five percent received an REU award. Nearly 50% of all national applicants submitted only one application to a national astronomy REU site; 64% of the national applicant pool submitted just two or one application. Based on the new Carnegie classifications, 54% of the national applicant pool comes from large universities, 20% from medium size institutions, and 24% are from small colleges. Finally, in this typical year 158 REU awards were granted, 43 % went to female students, 53% were granted to male students, and 21 % were made to self declared underrepresented minorities.
