Ion-neutral coupling studies with a tri-static Fabry-Perot observatory and the Poker Flat incoherent scatter radar
Abstract
Measurements of thermospheric neutral winds and temperatures obtained from high-resolution determination of Doppler shifts and Doppler broadenings are compared with simultaneous measurements of F-region plasma drifts to study the high latitude ion-neutral coupling relationship for quiet and active times. The three Fabry-Perot observatories are located at Poker Flat, Eagle, and Ft. Yukon within the central Alaska region with typically 250 km separations. These results are compared with the modeling of thermospheric winds and temperatures calculated by the University of Michigan Global Thermospheric and Ionospheric Model with generally good agreement found.
