The OMPS Limb Profiler Ozone and Aerosol Profile Retrieval Algorithms
Abstract
The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Limb Profiler (LP) instrument is scheduled to fly on the NPOESS Preparatory Program (NPP) satellite, which will launch in 2010. Our research team has completed the ozone and aerosol retrieval algorithms for this instrument, and also added further improvements to meet the strict performance requirements imposed on OMPS Environmental Data Records (EDRs). These ozone and aerosol profile retrieval algorithms will be described. To guide the algorithm development, proxy OMPS LP data was created from limb scattering data taken by the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III, Optical Spectrograph and Infrared Imaging System (OSIRIS), and SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) instruments, as well as from limb scattering radiances calculated by a radiative transfer model. The performance of the algorithms for these sets of proxy data will also be demonstrated.
