Batteries and Bypass Switch: Saft Heritage and Standard Search
Abstract
Most of the batteries are made of cells connected in series. To cope with cell failure and to avoid jeopardizing the rest of the battery, it is mandatory to remove it from the serial circuit. Consequently by-pass systems have been implemented in space batteries. The main requirements for by-pass selection are multiple: to avoid open circuit on battery serial circuit, to be compatible with derating rules, to have no unmitigated single point failure when coupled to battery and no failure propagation leading to loss of mission or safety issue. Among all systems, no standard exists so far. Some are proposed by battery makers, others are developed by prime manufacturers based on battery user manuals. This paper will present an overview on such components versus their type with associated heritage on the by-pass system evaluated or used at Saft.
