Extreme Ice Survey
Abstract
The Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) is a multi-disciplinary visual documentation of glacial deflation and retreat in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, the Rocky Mountains, Mexico, Bolivia and the Alps. Since spring 2007, 27 time- lapse cameras record 15 glaciers once an hour for every hour of daylight; documentation will continue until autumn 2009, with 400,000 frames produced. The images are compiled into video animations providing scientists with a vital look at glacial dynamics and the general public with real-world evidence of the changing Earth. EIS sets the stage for quantitative discussion of glacial retreat at the AGU annual meeting.
