Spectral Evolution of Gamma-Ray Burst Prompt Emission observed by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope
Abstract
We examine the spectral evolution properties of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and probe the connection between the prompt emission and the early hard X-ray afterglow. We categorize GRBs with measured redshifts according to their temporal morphology in the 15-150 keV range using mask-weighted light curves. We focus our study on bursts with isolated prompt emission features such as quiescent GRBs (bursts with precursor and/or successor emission) and single-pulse FRED-like GRBs. In particular, the quiescent burst GRB060526 exhibits early ( 250-350 sec) variable X-ray afterglow emission contemporaneous with the BAT successor emission, a possible consequence of refreshed shocks. We find evidence that some single-pulse FRED-like GRBs are the onset of the early hard X-ray afterglow.
