Massive DA White Dwarfs
Abstract
We report a statistical study of the mean mass and the high mass component of DA white dwarf mass distributions published over the past 20 years. We use a hypothesis-testing procedure to infer on the difference in the means of two samples. Our results show that most mean masses are different at the 95% confidence level. The high mass component, M > 0.8 M⊙, in each sample is smaller than that predicted by Ferrario et al. (2005) and Liebert, Bergeron, & Holberg (2005).
