Variability of Particle Number Concentration and Size Distribution in Barcelona
Abstract
Particle number concentrations and size distributions of aerosols between 13-800 nm were determined at an urban background location in Barcelona, Spain, from November 2003 to December 2004. Mean levels of particle number in this range were around 17.000 cm-3, being the most of them ultrafine particles (<100 nm). The peak of the distribution was found at around 40 nm. High number concentrations were obtained during wintertime, due to lower dispersive conditions, while low number concentrations were found in April and August, related with Atlantic advections and fewer emissions, respectively. This study demonstrate that road traffic is the most contributor to particle number levels, whereas the atmospheric processes play an important role on the evolution of these levels.
