Determining Stellar Parameters with the VIRUS-P
Abstract
The Prototype Visible Integral-Field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS-P) is a new instrument currently in use on the 2.7 meter telescope at McDonald Observatory. This instrument is a prototype of the Integral-Field Units (IFU) planned for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). The instrument has a pack of 246 fibers which can be used to obtain complete coverage of an area of 1 square arcminute on the sky. The range in wavelength is from 3500 to 5900 Angstroms at a resolution of R 900. Although the instrument is most suitable for obtaining spectra of galaxies, it can also be used for stellar work.
We will present results of analysis for spectra taken with the VIRUS-P instrument of stars in the globular clusters M92 and M3. Our data set includes red giants, horizontal branch, subgiants and main sequence turnoff stars. We will present the determination and comparison of radial velocities using several reduction techniques and also the determination of stellar parameters of Teff, Logg and [Fe/H]. The results from this analysis places strong constraints on the science which can be conducted within the HETDEX ancillary stellar program.- Publication:
