HI STAR 2007: An Astronomy Research Program for Middle and High School Students
Abstract
In June 2007, the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawai`i hosted a week-long "astronomy camp" for middle and high school students from the Hawaiian Islands. Students converged on the university campus for the Hawaii Student Teacher Astronomy Research Program armed with enthusiasm for astronomy, but little knowledge or understanding of content or the research process. After a week of lectures, activities, and observing, all students were able to begin astronomy research projects which they can continue at their schools. The content areas range from tracking asteroids, to doing photometry of variable stars, and calculating the rotational velocities of galaxies. We discuss the methodology and highlights of the program, as well as pre and post-test results which show learning gains over the week.
