Mobile Line-of-Sight Radio Propagation Modeling for Polar Regions
Abstract
This research establishes a methodology for modeling the propagation path for line-of-sight communications links in Polar Regions. The model is based on a round-earth two-ray model properly enhanced with the electromagnetic reflecting properties of the polar surface and taking into account antennas with multiple elements. As part of a major research project, received power measurements of a communication link operating in the 2.4-2.483 GHz band in Greenland were made and compared to theory. The results were in excellent agreement and demonstrate the utility of this model for predicting performance of communications systems associated with scientific research efforts in Polar Regions.
