New observations of hurricanes from the CloudSat radar
Abstract
The CloudSat 94 GHz cloud radar has been gathering data continuously since 2 June 2006. The radar provides a new view of the vertical structure of clouds from the top of the atmosphere to the surface, and the radar observations are processed into estimates of water and ice content with 500 m vertical resolution. Several examples of hurricane overflights will be shown, including at least one direct pass over a hurricane eye and several multi-day passes over developing hurricanes.
