Eudoxos Observatory: Communicating Astronomy using Robotic Telescopes
Abstract
The Eudoxos Observatory is located on a mountaintop of Mount Ainos, in Kefallonia Island, Greece. The project started in 1993, with design and development of the domes, telescopes, hardware and software systems and basic curricula for school education. In 1999, first light was seen. Eudoxos is a joint project, developed through the collaboration of many institutions and independent contributors from various scientific and technological sectors. Eudoxos currently provides higher education and undergraduate students with hands on access to astronomy, astrophysics and general science using remotely submitted observation schedules. Part of the observing time is devoted to research observations by the projects science team. In the light of new developments the project enriches its curricula and upgrades scientific and support hardware, software and web access, adapting to the latest technologies and trends in the related fields. The project's future involves expanding international collaboration and contributing innovative developments in education, public outreach and research alike.
