Analysis of Eruptions on the Solar Limb: Ejections and Supra-Arcade Inflows Seen in Soft X-rays
Abstract
An analysis of flares at the solar limb as viewed by the GOES 12 Solar X-ray Imager is presented. The analysis was conducted by creating "stack" plots that enable the extraction of displacement, speed, and acceleration of various features along a given linear track. The results have revealed mass ejections as well as dark and bright inflows or downflows. The high cadence observations of the SXI make its data particularly applicable to characterizing the acceleration of CME-related ejecta in the earliest stages of eruption. While scattered light in the instrument reduces contrast, a number of inflow/downflow events that have been observed are described. We provide a survey of these observed phenomena in the low corona and make a preliminary statistical reduction of observed properties.
