Stellar Populations in the Southeast Part of the Small Magellanic Cloud from HST/WFPC2 Imaging
Abstract
We present a new color-magnitude diagram of a field in the southeast part of the main bar of the Small Magellanic Cloud, near the H II region N12A. The CMD is based on imaging with the WFPC-2 camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. VI photometry of stars in this field was performed using HSTphot. The photometry is 80% complete to V and I magnitudes of 22, or M(V) = +3. We have analyzed the CMD taking into account the spread in distance modulus for this part of the SMC (based on the spread in distance of Cepheids within 30 arcmin of our field), and the reddening toward the field. The CMD in this field is very similar to the CMD obtained by McCumber, Garnett, & Dufour (2005) for a field in the east wing of the SMC, although the mean distance and distance spread are slightly larger, and the average reddening is also slightly larger in the N12A field. We will present results of Monte Carlo simulation of the star formation history of this field based on our CMD.
