High-speed video techniques for optimizing high modulus inflatable structures
Abstract
While rapid progress is being made in the ability of numerical tools to simulate the structural loads in high modulus inflatable structures (i.e. superpressure balloons and space inflatables), the actual failure modes are still difficult to predict. Subscale and full-size tests of the structures are usually necessary to validate the numerical models and provide better insight into potential failure modes and factors of safety. This paper discusses the use of high-speed video to provide invaluable insight into specific failure mode and as a valuable tool in the optimization of the structures. Several actual tests will be presented with both the advantages and limitations of the techniques.
