THP/SSP sensor on HUYGENS probe: pre-flight calibration and simulated performance on Titan
Abstract
The THP temperature and thermal conductivity sensor belonging to the SSP/Huygens suite of sensors will be operating during the probe descent and on Titan's surface, after successful landing. We present the results of thermal conductivity determination from the pre-flight calibration runs in several gaseous and liquid media as well as simulations of the expected instrument performance in the atmosphere and on the hypothetical liquid surface of Titan. The extension of the hot-wire method from its asymptotic form, valid for large time after switching on the wire heating, to smaller times will be presented and confronted with the calibration data.
