Noise received by an elecric antenna in solar wind: application to Cluster observations
Abstract
In the recent paper [1] it was proved that the effective length of a dipole antenna in a magnetized plasma grows by more than an order of magnitude under conditions of lower oblique resonance. Here we are presenting a study of an electric dipole in a streaming solar wind plasma, considered to be otherwise isotropic, and receiving natural waves or noise in the vicinity of the plasma resonance. We show how the readings of the voltage measured on the antenna terminals are to be converted to the electric field amplitude of the incident waves under such conditions. We calculate noise spectra and the antenna effective length depending on its position relative to the solar wind velocity and we apply our theoretical findings to noise measurements by Wide Band Data Instrument on CLUSTER II spacecraft.
