Spatial Noise Correlations in Charge Density Wave Conduction
Abstract
We have measured spatio-temporal correlations of charge-density-wave conduction noise in single-crystal NbSe3 at low temperature. CDW motion creates both 1/f-like (``broadband'') noise and high frequency coherent oscillations (``narrowband'' noise) with fc ∝ v_c, where vc is the CDW velocity. Earlier low-frequency measurements revealed long-range spatial correlations (up to at least 500μm) in the broadband noise above the threshold field for CDW conduction, E_T. We have improved our apparatus for low-background measurements up to GHz frequencies, allowing field/velocity-dependent correlations in the narrowband noise to be studied as well. Measurements of dynamical correlations should provide a powerful method for characterizing CDW dynamics.
